Care Team Corner: Amit Bhanderi, pharmacist team lead

Here at Suvera, our care team works collaboratively with practices, PCNs and ICBs to proactively manage patients’ chronic care needs. We spoke to team lead, Amit Bhanderi, to learn more about his career journey as a pharmacist, what he loves most about his role and how it’s positively impacted his work-life balance.

Q: How long have you been a team lead here at Suvera?

Amit: I joined Suvera in April 2022. I was offered the role of team lead in October 2022 and was really positively surprised to be given a career progression opportunity so soon after joining. When I first took the position, I was the sole team lead managing a group of over 10 pharmacists. Now, as we’ve grown so rapidly, there are six team leads each managing a group of clinicians including pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Q: What made you want to join Suvera?

Amit: It was an innovative, new and exciting opportunity. Admittedly, it was a difficult decision for me to leave my previous role where I was settled to take on something completely different. However, my passion to help patients with long-term conditions was the major deciding factor. Ensuring chronic patients are well cared for and managed is at the forefront of continuing challenges facing GP practices up and down the country. So the idea of a remote platform that could support proactive chronic care was the reason I jumped at the opportunity to join Suvera.

“There is a good work-life balance for all care team members that they may not have experienced at their previous PCN or practice-based roles.”

Q: What does a typical day look like at Suvera?

Amit: As a pharmacist at Suvera, you’ll typically be completing reviews across conditions we currently manage such as hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes and asthma. This also includes ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner such as urgent reviews, responding to patient messages and checking blood test results. As a team lead, I ensure team members I manage are well supported and reach out to them whenever required. I also manage incoming tasks and patient messages, ensuring these are assigned to allocated clinicians that manage corresponding practices. I’m responsible for investigating any incidents which may impact patient care/safety and ensuring processes are adjusted accordingly where required.

Q: What other responsibilities do you have in your role?

Amit: As we are a fast-growing company, we are continually recruiting. I am involved in the screening process, reviewing applications and CVs and conducting interviews and giving feedback. Once recruited, I support and guide new members of the team to ensure they settle in well and are ready to go within the first month of joining. I regularly have one-to-one sessions with my team at least once every two weeks, as well as any ad-hoc meetings that come about during the course of the day. Conducting probation reviews/appraisals and managing performance also forms a key part of my role.

Q: How do you find the team dynamic within the care team at Suvera?

Amit: Overall, l feel there is a good work-life balance for all care team members that they may not have experienced at their previous PCN or practice-based roles. When attending the office, physically seeing and getting involved in discussions with other teams such as the tech team is great too. Being able to work across multiple teams at Suvera is rewarding for me and a testament to the way the company operates.

“I have never worked in a position before where I have so much impact in how the platform runs.”

Q: What excites you most about working at Suvera and in healthcare technology?

Amit: It’s a young, dynamic and fast-growing company.  Also, being involved in nearly every aspect to ensure the product, our platform and our processes are constantly developing and improving to cater for the needs of our clients and our patients is very rewarding. There is constant change. Reviewing and updating our policies is so frequent because we are always looking to better the services we provide.

Q: How has the growth journey been at Suvera?

Amit: When I first started at Suvera, we were managing hypertension. Now we are managing three other conditions. Our care team dashboard has continually grown too, and we have one platform to manage all incoming tasks, which has significantly improved efficiency for practices. There is still a lot more work required, but it is satisfying to see how the product has developed and the involvement I have had in offering ideas and them being taken into account.

Q: How has working at Suvera impacted your work-life balance?

Amit: The flexibility at Suvera means I have reduced transport times to and from work. This allows me to focus on my fitness during lunch breaks. I tend to go for a run during this break and this enables me to get away from the screen, get up and active, as most of your working day is seated.

Q: What other perks of the job do you enjoy?

Amit: The wellness benefit is a really good perk. It gets everyone active knowing that the cost of any activity they do that supports their wellbeing is covered. I use this perk a lot to support my gym membership fees, to cover the cost of any group runs that I participate in around London, and also cover my fees for squash which I tend to play occasionally. A generous fund for home equipment is also provided.
